Chapter 14

The sun had just set when Cassie pulled into the parking lot of Fred’s bar. Lines of cars filled most of the spaces. She found one near the road and parked. As she looked over the crowd inside, she guessed that news of the murder had caused them all to gather. There would be a packed dining room at Mirabel’s as well. The community had a lot to talk about, a lot to grieve, and a lot to worry about. If one murder had taken place, could more come next?

As Cassie made her way through the crowd she noticed only one man sat alone at a table, while the others were filled to capacity. When he glanced in her direction, she recognized him as the young man that had pushed past her at Gavin’s house.

“Rupert?” Cassie sat down beside him. “That’s your name, isn’t it?”

“Yes.” He stared down into his beer and refused to look in her direction.

“Am I disturbing you?” Cassie frowned. “I saw you today, at your father’s house, do you remember?”

“I remember.” Rupert picked up the glass and took a sip. “I don’t want to talk about it, okay?”

“Okay.” Cassie nodded to the waitress who walked over to their table. “I’ll take what he’s having please, and another for him if he’d like.”

“Thanks.” Rupert glanced over at her for the first time.

“After the day you’ve had, it’s the least I can do.” Cassie shook her head as she folded her arms on the table. “I know saying I’m sorry for your loss doesn’t mean anything right now, but I am sorry.”

“I just can’t believe he’s gone.” Rupert rubbed his hand across his eyes. “I keep expecting my phone to ring, to hear his voice again.”

“I’ve heard about how close you and your uncle were. You two had a special connection, didn’t you?” Cassie accepted the beer that the waitress handed to her.

“You could say that, I guess.” Rupert frowned. “At least, I thought we did.”

“Did something about that change?” Cassie inched her chair closer to his.

“My whole life, my dad expected me to be a certain way. He wanted me to grow up to be just like him. But I’m not him. I’m different. I’m not as smart as he is.” Rupert took a sip of his second beer.

“I’m sure you’re smart, Rupert. Parents can sometimes be harsh, though usually they have the best of intentions. I’m sorry things are hard between you and your father.” Cassie smiled. “I’m here to listen if you’d like to talk about it.”

“Why?” Rupert stared into her eyes.

“Sometimes it feels better to just get it all out.” Cassie shrugged.

“No, that’s not what I meant. Why are you here?” Rupert raised an eyebrow. “You obviously came in here to talk to me, even though like you said, you don’t know me.”

“I’m here because I want to know what happened to your uncle. All I’ve heard from people all day is how close you two were. I thought if I wanted to find out more about him, you’d be the one to talk to.
